Whale Season on Hawaii’s Big Island: A Unique View From the Sky

Every winter, the waters around Hawaii’s Big Island come alive with one of nature’s most incredible migrations — humpback whale season.
From December through April, thousands of humpback whales travel to Hawaii’s warm waters to breed and raise their calves. While many visitors try to spot whales from boats or shorelines, there’s another perspective most people never think about.
From the sky.
A Different Way to See Whale Season
During a skydive with Big Island Gravity Skydiving, you’ll climb to altitude above the North Kohala coastline before exiting the aircraft for your jump.
From thousands of feet above the ocean, the water often looks crystal clear. On the way up in the aircraft — and sometimes even under canopy — it’s not uncommon to spot humpback whales moving along the coastline below.
While whale sightings aren’t guaranteed, seeing them from the air is a completely different experience.
More Ocean Wildlife From Above
Whales aren’t the only marine life you might see during a skydive.
The waters along the Big Island’s coast are home to:
• Spinner dolphins often traveling in pods near shore
• Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) swimming along the reef
• Occasionally even manta rays gliding through the water
From the air, the contrast between the deep blue ocean and the lighter coastal water can make marine life surprisingly easy to spot.
Winter Skydiving on the Big Island
Winter months often bring clear skies and calm morning conditions along the Kohala coast, making it a beautiful time of year to experience skydiving on the island.
And if you happen to catch a glimpse of whales, dolphins, or honu during your jump, it makes the experience even more memorable.
Experience Skydiving on Hawaii’s Big Island
Big Island Gravity is the only skydiving center located on Hawaii’s Big Island, operating from Upolu Airport in North Kohala.
Our tandem skydives take you up to 10,000 feet above the coastline, followed by about 30 seconds of freefall and a 5-minute parachute flight with incredible views of the island and surrounding ocean.
If you’re visiting the Big Island during whale season, skydiving is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience the island from above.
